Chapter 36
Timâs first phone call was to Chief Galluzzo, who didnât appreciate being called to duty after his dinner. The sleepy small town he had chosen to work in had changed recently from a cushy job to a real grind, mostly because of the man on the other end of the line. He bristled at Timâs tone.
âBring the dogs, Chief. She just leftâand sheâll be easy to track if you hurry. Sheâll lead them right to my daughters. How long will it take you to get them?â
âTim, the dogs belong to the State Police. Iâve got to get a hold of them, and then we have to hope that we have some canines in the area. They move them around according to demand. Iâm guessing Concord might haveâ¦â
âCall them quick. Weâre going to have toââ
ââ¦office hours, andââ
âJust fucking call them!â He slammed the phone down. It was probably unwise to hang up on the Chief of Police, but in this case, Tim knew he was right. Heâd been right all along about Galluzzo whoâd had no problem employing Bob-fucking-Simmons as half of his police force. He was incompetent.
Two seconds later, he picked up the phone again as he pulled out Jordan Blockâs business card from his wallet.
âJordan, itâs Tim Russell in Sanborn. Your bodyguard just walked out after seeing our Lady face-to-face.â
âWait, waitâslow downâheâs gone? Whereâd he go? And you saw her?â
âYeah, thatâs right. Andre the Giant was a coward in the end. He left your camera here too.â
âDid you film anything?â
âHell no. I was too busy staring at the business end of a butcher knife as he cowered in the corner. I donât know what you want to do about it, but youâre down one cameraman, and weâre down a pair of eyes and ears.â
âShe pulled a knife on you? How close was she? Did you get a good look at her?â
âShe had me by the throat, howâs that for close? She blew up our dinner tableâjust showed upâsnuck in, quietâlike a ghost. Stunk up the place too. Sheâs rotten, man.â Jordan couldnât believe his ears.
âI, uh⦠I donât know what toâUh, did anyone else see her?â
âYeah, four of us, including your boy. Ask him if you donât believe meâif you ever see his ass again. Listen, Iâve got to go. Iâm going to try to follow her with my dog until the State Police get here with theirs. Send us another bodyguardâand tell the next guy the truth before he takes the job.â
Jordan Block hung up the phone in disbelief. She had him by the throat. Mark, his supposed prize bodyguard had seen herâand quit on the spot. The State Police were on their way. This would make the news tomorrow.
Hot damn. Time to make some phone calls and keep things as quiet as possible.
