Chapter 36

Tim’s first phone call was to Chief Galluzzo, who didn’t appreciate being called to duty after his dinner. The sleepy small town he had chosen to work in had changed recently from a cushy job to a real grind, mostly because of the man on the other end of the line. He bristled at Tim’s tone.

“Bring the dogs, Chief. She just left—and she’ll be easy to track if you hurry. She’ll lead them right to my daughters. How long will it take you to get them?”

“Tim, the dogs belong to the State Police. I’ve got to get a hold of them, and then we have to hope that we have some canines in the area. They move them around according to demand. I’m guessing Concord might have…”

“Call them quick. We‘re going to have to—“

“…office hours, and—“

“Just fucking call them!” He slammed the phone down. It was probably unwise to hang up on the Chief of Police, but in this case, Tim knew he was right. He’d been right all along about Galluzzo who’d had no problem employing Bob-fucking-Simmons as half of his police force. He was incompetent.

Two seconds later, he picked up the phone again as he pulled out Jordan Block’s business card from his wallet.

“Jordan, it’s Tim Russell in Sanborn. Your bodyguard just walked out after seeing our Lady face-to-face.”

“Wait, wait—slow down—he’s gone? Where’d he go? And you saw her?”

“Yeah, that’s right. Andre the Giant was a coward in the end. He left your camera here too.”

“Did you film anything?”

“Hell no. I was too busy staring at the business end of a butcher knife as he cowered in the corner. I don’t know what you want to do about it, but you’re down one cameraman, and we’re down a pair of eyes and ears.”

“She pulled a knife on you? How close was she? Did you get a good look at her?”

“She had me by the throat, how’s that for close? She blew up our dinner table—just showed up—snuck in, quiet—like a ghost. Stunk up the place too. She’s rotten, man.” Jordan couldn’t believe his ears.

“I, uh… I don’t know what to—Uh, did anyone else see her?”

“Yeah, four of us, including your boy. Ask him if you don’t believe me—if you ever see his ass again. Listen, I’ve got to go. I’m going to try to follow her with my dog until the State Police get here with theirs. Send us another bodyguard—and tell the next guy the truth before he takes the job.”

Jordan Block hung up the phone in disbelief. She had him by the throat. Mark, his supposed prize bodyguard had seen her—and quit on the spot. The State Police were on their way. This would make the news tomorrow.

Hot damn. Time to make some phone calls and keep things as quiet as possible.
